Loop by Sophie de Vocht |
This week I have
been exploring tassels. I’m interested in
the fun, tactile quality of them and am keen to see them as a large surface but with this size yarn/cord that would be extremely
time consuming so I need to see what other materials I can use to increase the
scale.
I have also
experimented making macrame out of rope and cable ties. Using a stiff, strong
material totally changes the quality, and it expands and contracts. This
movement I am keen to take forward and develop.
I had also my
two-tutor-crit this week with Mark and Julie. The session provided a good
insight into how print students work and how the context is a driving force in
the design process. This is very different to how I work and although I have
had a vague idea of context before the tutorial I have since researched further
after Julie and Mark suggested surface design and interiors. Julie also suggested I push the scale as I worked well on the Cheshire Oaks project.
The above piece is by
Dutch designer Sophie de Vocht, inspired by the tufting technique used to make
carpets. I like how she has taken a traditional technique and by pushing the
scale and changing the materials has creating something really exciting and
fun. Not only does the piece function as a chair, but by allowing the loops to
spill over onto the floor, it also works as a rug or blanket. Looking at this
piece makes me smile imagining what it would feel like and I would like to
translate this playful aspect into my own work.
